Hair - Finger Waves

Equipment:

  • Paddle brush
  • Pintail comb
  • Sectioning clips
  • Kirby grips
  • Spray bottle
  • Hair gel
Steps:
  1. Brush through hair to remove any knots.
  2. Spray hair with water until fully saturated. Using gel will make the hair stickier and create a hard feel and wet look to the hair.
  3. Comb through a section of hair from the root. Take the comb and move it towards either the front of the back of the head.
  4. Once in position, take your finger and pinch the hair to hold. Place the comb under and brush up the hair and pinch with your fingers.
  5. Take the comb and the remaining hair and direct the hair in the opposite way to the first one. Again, pinch the hair with your fingers.
  6. Keep on doing this in opposite ways so it creates an 'S' shape.
  7. To help hold the grips in place, you can use either kirby grips or sectioning clips. (Make sure they are flat as any grooved clips will leave a mark on the hair).
  8. Leave to dry naturally, or place under a dryer until hair is set completely and remove grips.
Unfortunately I didn't get any step by step photos of me doing it as I didn't have any free hands! But I do have the end result.

I am pleased with how my finger waves came out, especially asa this was my first time at doing them. I found it quite difficult to get my head around as it is a whole new technique for me and my hands wouldn't do what my brain was telling them to do. However, after many many attempts I think I started to pick it up slowly. I only used water for this look, I do think gel would have helped set and hold it in place better so I will try that next time. It's not perfect, but it's not going to be on my first time. I will definitely be practicing this over summer!

Makeup: Tricks of the Trade

In this lesson, I wanted to recreate one of Ellis' designs. Unfortunately, I only had a small amount of time to do this and I didn't have anything to block out the eyebrows with. I wanted to use blue as not only is it one of Ellis' human colours, it is also a current SS16 trend. Below are my images that I did in the lesson.

Hair: Classic shapes and Silhouettes

Equipment:
  • Pintail comb
  • Paddle brush
  • Sea salt spray
  • Water spray
  • Hair spray
  • Sectioning clips
  • Hair curlers
  • Hair bungees
  • Kirby grips
Steps: Sleek Ponytail
  1. Brush the hair to get rid of any knots and apply sea salt spray and brush through.
  2. If the model has normal to fine hair, using one hand start to pull the hair back into a ponytail.
  3. Use water spray to keep stray hairs back and have your model tilt their head back slightly. This will enable you to get the hair tight underneath without it becoming baggy looking.
  4. Once happy with how it looks, take your hair bungee and wrap it round the hair and secure in place. If necessary, add a few more kirby grips for extra security.
  5. Take a piece of hair from the ponytail and wrap around the hair so the bungee is hidden and secure with a kirby grip.
  6. If your model has thicker hair and are struggling to get it all in the bungee you can do it in 2 stages. You can section the hair into two sections, top and bottom.
  7. Clip up the top section and take the bottom section into a ponytail using the same technique as above. Secure bottom section with a hair bungee.
  8. Take the top section of hair and comb down, blending it into the bottom ponytail. Take another hair bungee and wrap top layer around the bottom hair ponytail.
  9. Take a piece of hair and wrap round so the hair bungee is hidden and secure with a kirby grip.

Steps: French Twist
  1. Section the hair at the front so you have two side sections and a back section.
  2. To create more volume, you can curl the hair away from the face which will help with the direction of the twist.
  3. Start backcombing the top section of the hair to create the height at the front.
  4. Secure the backcombed hair at the back and bring one of the side sections over and secure in place with kirby grips.
  5. Bring the second section of hair over and create a roll by twisting and tucking the hair in. Secure in place when happy with how the twist looks.
  6. Hair spray to get rid of stray hairs and pin up any loose pieces. Make sure all grips are hidden.

I found this lesson enjoyable and helpful as I always end up with a baggy section underneath. It was useful to know tilting the head back creates tension which makes it easier. I also enjoyed creating the french twist as again it requires backcombing which is something I'm not great at.

Makeup: Lips

In this lesson we focused on the lips, creating a natural to a red lip. The image below was taped on each mirror to give us inspiration.

The first look I created was a natural lip, which then developed into a red lip and then into a dark lip with pearls. Each time I would add a darker colour and tried to create an ombre design. I really enjoyed this lesson as it was fun to play around with different colours and techniques. I decided to keep each design quite natural as we didn't have a lot of time but I would have created a more avant garde look.

Hair: Natural Beach Waves

Equipment:
  • Mousse
  • Salt spray
  • Hairdryer
  • Diffuser
  • Curling tongs
  • Straighteners
  • Sectioning clips
Steps - Diffuser:
  1. Wash hair and blast with the hairdryer so hair isn't dripping wet but is still damp.
  2. Apply a good amount of mousse and sea salt spray and comb through to evenly spread.
  3. Take hairdryer with diffuser on full heat (medium is damaged) and scrunch the hair with the diffuser, gently tilting the clients head back and forth. Keep checking that the model is ok.

Steps - Curling Tongs:
  1. Section the hair into pieces to curl.
  2. Use the large tongs to create a wave, not a curl. Leave the bottom section out so it doesn't become too curly.

Steps - Twist and Straighteners:
  1. Take a strand of hair and create a twist, take another piece of hair next to it and twist the two together. Twist all the way to the bottom.
  2. Take straighteners and press down onto the hair.
  3. For bigger waves, take larger sections or they will become too curly.

CHIGNON

Overall, I enjoyed this lesson as it was good to try out all three techniques for the beach waves. It was good to put all of these to practice and to create a chignon at the end.

Makeup: Eyes and Liner

In today's lesson, we focused on the eyes and liner. We could choose to either do a natural line, thicker line and/or smokey eye. I started off with a natural line of eyeliner which I would say could be used for everyday looks.

 NATURAL LINER

SMOKEY EYE

For this look, I simply created a smokey eye which I would say is more of a look to wear in the evening as it is slightly heavier than what most people would usually wear in the day.

CUT CREASE

I like this design as it shapes the eye well and gives it good definition. I like the colour choice as it is relevant to Ellis Faas' human colours.

Overall, I enjoyed this session as liner is something I struggle with, especially liquid eyeliner as it can easily smudge and ruin. I think I need a lot more practice with liquid liner as gel seems to be my favourite to use at the moment. However, I want to push myself to be able to use a variety of techniques.
